There is not anything to winner before we see the final outcome of these searches, but it appears more than lip service has been paid into The Rooney Rule, and there is a sense within the classes doing the hiring which time for words is over -- this league has to be more equitable in who gets to sit in positions of power within the game, and, ultimately, just the owners themselves may change that.
Experienced coaches like Marvin Lewis and executives like Rick Smith seem really poised at this stage to have a valid chance with numerous teams. There is hope that 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will have better luck this time around.
The league has become more competitive, proactive and consistent with its messaging to teams about the requirement to change how they have been doing business, and I've heard repeatedly from people doing the hiring, and those who represent many of the very best candidates, the nature of this cycle will in reality differ.
"I've never felt a vibe similar to this before," said one prominent agent. "I believe Goodell has put down the hammer and these groups are receiving the message."
Before Graves has broached the topic of pushing all hires back until after the Super Bowl to attempt to level the playing area to this in and outside of the match, giving the rules that govern the game.
